Our Gift | Hendersonville TN Portrait Photographer

I got my Valentine's Day gift idea for my husband this year on a snow day. Both of my boys were home from school, it was cold outside, and I was thinking of something to do.

Soooo, what better way to spend an afternoon that take pictures?

My original idea was to take a picture of them in daddy's tie. But after watching several YouTube videos, I still couldn't get it tied right. So we moved on to daddy's shoes and a shirt. Here are my favorites:

I pulled this little storyboard together for him to keep in his office. I know it's a little Father's Day-ish, but I think he loved it!

Happy Valentine's Day!

My little man gave me the best Valentine's Day present a few days early. He had no clue how special it was to me, but it sure did melt my heart.

Do you see it? Right there, under the ABC's (that skip H-Q might I add), is the most precious message ever.

I LV YOU

I LV YOU too, B! Thank you for letting me be your Mommy!

All Mine | Hendersonville TN Portrait Photographer

Ok, I admit it. I am bad about printing my own pictures. I know, I know, shhhh don't tell anyone. This picture was from the beach 5 months ago, just got it in today. The frame has been sitting empty on my bookcase for 2 months. But it sure was worth the wait!

This is a mounted 20x30 canvas. It is framed in a custom wooden frame with no glass. My absolute favorite way to display a picture. Have I said that before? I love the texture of the canvas and the wood together. Glass would ruin it all. All of my canvases are coated to protect against UV rays and fingerprints.

My point in this post is... Don't be afraid to go big! Can you imagine a 16x20 in this space? It would be swallowed. Make sure when you order your prints to measure the wall and the frame. You want it to fit the space. If you have a hard time imagining what is too small or too big, I recommend cutting a piece of newspaper to the size you are considering. Hang it in the space and stand back. I've been known to keep that paper up there for days. Take advantage of your beautiful family portraits, display them, and enjoy them!

Back to School, Back to Work | Hendersonville TN Photographer

My 2 little stinkers are back to school today. We had a blast playing, relaxing, and spending time together, but their fighting was getting more and more frequent. So it was time for a separation :) I tried my best to refrain from working, and I did pretty well. I'm officially back to work with 3 sessions scheduled this week. I can't wait to start getting some sweet faces up on the blog again. Until then, here are a few of my favorites from our break, my boys being boys.

2012 Goals | Hendersonville TN Family Photographer

I love when a new year rolls around. Since I've been in business, I spend the first month of the year making plans and goals for SPP. I thought I'd share a few of them.
1. Rebrand - new logo, marketing materials, etc. I want everything to be fresh and streamlined.
2. Learn Wordpress - Wordpress is by far the best way for photographers to blog. I get overwhelmed thinking about completely switching over my blog, leaving this blog, and learning a new one, but it's time. As soon as the rebranding is finished, the new blog will be revealed.
3. Start offering in person ordering sessions. - The hardest part about having a home office is that no one gets to see my great products. I'd love to start offering these to help my clients plan how to really make the most of their portraits.
4. Buy some new gear, attend a workshop, and save money to attend WPPI in Las Vegas for 2013.
5. Stick to real working hours - like no more replying to emails at 11pm just because. I think I can, I think I can... :)

And since a post isn't any fun without a picture... This was one of my warm day sessions that I couldn't post until after Christmas. I can't wait for it to warm up and start spring sessions!

My Boys | Hendersonville TN Custom Portrait Photographer

If you follow my blog, I'm sure you've seen me complain about photographing my boys. I have the photographer's curse, where I can't ever get good ones of them. Ok, so I admit, I used Ice Cream Man bribery. We could hear the truck's music playing, and I told them they better get close and smile if they wanted ice cream. But, hey! Whatever works!

Family | Hendersonville Family Portrait Photographer

We went to Memphis over Labor Day weekend for a last minute trip. Normally everytime I go in town, I'm swamped with photo sessions. But we dedicated this one to just visiting with family, and it was SO nice. My boys haven't been up on the blog in a while, so I thought I'd share a few of them with their Mimi and Daddy, oh and our dogs :)

Memories | Hendersonville TN Family Photographer

For those of you that have had a photo session with me, you've probably seen that I can be pretty calm under pressure. Cranky toddlers, crying babies, worried mommies... they don't stress me out. They probably bring out the best in me, and I'm always promising you at the end that they are great. But when it comes to my family, I'm the complete opposite.

My boys don't do pictures. I usually end up with a picture envisioned of them, and I turn into a stressed out mess to get it. A stressed out mess, combined with an impatient husband, and 2 wild kids really never turns out like I want it.

So... with that said, I took a whole new approach to our family's beach session.

The theme? An evening at the beach.

All I wanted was the golden light of the sun and my boys. My boys digging in the sand. My boys running and playing. My boys finding seashells. My boys just being themselves, my boys. And as you'll see at the end, my boys (well one of them) naked as usual.

It's what I wanted and what I got. I loved it. No one cried. No one got mad. No one got frustrated. The boys didn't even know we were having our "official beach pictures". They went home with seashells in their pockets, sand between their toes, and talking about how much fun they had.

I think these are my new favorites. Now I need a really big one blown up in my office. Which one do you think it should be???

Home Sweet Home

Photobucket

Although I could have stayed a month, we're back to the real world. If you emailed me last week, I'll begin returning emails tomorrow. I'll also be catching up on orders, proofing galleries, and sneak peeks. So if you are wondering where you stand in that process, feel free to email me. Try to be patient with me as I play catch up. I don't have a "real" work day until Tuesday.

Surprise! | Hendersonville TN Family Photographer

I loved being a teacher, especially at the end of the school year. I'd look at all of my "babies" and think back on how much they had grown throughout the year, how much they had learned, and how well I got to know them. Then, I'd pass them on to their next teacher. I was, and still am, passionate about teaching. It's a career where you get to help so many children, and I love it.

Now, I'm photographing families, and although I may not spend as much time with them or teach them anything, I still get to watch them grow. I've made so many friends and have gotten to watch so many families grow. I love seeing my pictures in frames, on birth announcements, on Facebook pages, and even blogs. Now, I feel like I get to help families capture memories, and I love it even more.

That leads to an awesome surprise that I got to help out with several months ago. One of my very first families is having baby #2, and this is how they announced it to their family!

I was so excited to be a part of the secret and the announcement! Congrats "S" Family! I can't wait to meet your new addition!

Something Else I'm Loving Right Now - Hendersonville TN Photographer

If you can't tell, I miss blogging sneak peaks right now. This snowy winter has left me with no sessions this week, so I get to clean my house, play with my little monsters, work on orders, and hang this fabulous new frame that my hubs BUILT! We were so in need of a picture of the two of us, and I thought this one was perfect. It just came in this week, and I couldn't wait to share it.

Something I am Loving Right Now - Hendersonville TN Photographer

My office! When we first moved, I was so excited to have an office. Between photos, orders, packaging, and paperwork, I felt like my photography business was taking over our old house. Now I have my own space, and it is soooo nice.

Photobucket

I thought I'd share a little story about the picture above my desk. It is from my 4 year old's newborn session. The story behind the picture is what brought me to the philosophy of my photography business.

When he was born, we received a free session to a local photographer. We had his pictures taken, and 2 weeks later I went back to view them. They sent me into a room, turned off the lights, played music, and handed me a box of tissues. I fell in love with all of the pictures. After the slideshow, they handed me a pricelist. The cheapest print was a 5x5 that cost $99. My jaw dropped and my heart started pounding, I knew there was no way that my husband would pay $99 for one picture the size of his hand.

I left the studio crying, not because of the beautiful pictures, but because I knew I would never have them. By then, my son was 4 weeks old, and it was too late to get more pictures taken.

Well, 10 months later, my fabulous husband surprised me on Mother's Day with this gallery wrap. He had the photographer put 4 pictures on it, so that I'd have 4 pictures instead of 1 big one. These are the only newborn pictures I have of my little guy, and I will cherish them forever. It took us another year to pick out the perfect frame, so it actually wasn't hung on the wall until he was 2!

When I started my business, I said that if or when I got good, no matter how good or busy I became, I would never charge so much for that to happen to a new mommy. I never want a momma to look at her pictures that I've taken of her child and cry because she can't afford the ones she wants. I do this because I love what I do, and I hope you enjoy it as well.

2010 in Review

I'm a little behind on this post, but I just wanted to wish everyone a happy new year.

2010 was an amazing year for my family and my business. It was my first full year as business. I am so thankful for all of those that have supported my business, encouraged me, and given me advice. It was also a year of lots of changes for our family. After planning to stay at home, I went back to work for 6 weeks when my youngest turned one. Just when I accepted that I'd be a mommy, teacher, and photographer, an awesome opportunity was given to my husband in Nashville. We've moved to a great new city, and I have been given the chance to have both of my dreams... stay at home mommy and photographer.

I have so many plans for 2011, and I can't wait to see what is in store. Thank you for following my blog!

I blinked...

...and my baby turned into a little boy.

Where does time go?

Photobucket

Photobucket

I'm not sure if it's the fall clothes or that he's really just gotten that big. I love photographing these moments for everyone else so much, that sometimes I feel like I don't photography my own kids as much as I'd like. It's probably a good thing though, because I wouldn't have enough wall space to frame them all!

The previous two pictures are a couple of my favorites of my little man. The first one looks like such a GQ pose, and the second one is a face of his that I see ALL the time. I love that I have it captured from now on. I'm amazed that I got any good ones, it is sooooo hard to take pictures alone, let alone of an 18 month old!

Isn't he the most beautiful thing EVER?

I know, I may be a little biased, but I couldn't resist. I can't believe how big my baby boy is getting.

More from his "mini session" soon. When I can catch up on more of my editing :)

More Beach Pictures of My Family

We had a fantastic family vacation in Destin. It was a much needed getaway from all of the hectic details with our move. I still have a few August sessions available, so send me an email if you'd like to book a session! My last session will be August 26th. I'm going to miss all of my fabulous Memphis clients! I'd love for you to come and visit me in Nashville, though!!!
